MOSAIC: A significant ‘Light Sport Aircraft (LSA)’ reform

In July 2025 there was a significant announcement in the USA (at Oshkosh) that the FAA has approved 'MOSAIC' (Modernisation of Special Airworthiness Category). This will have massive repercussions across the globe, including Australia.

Here, the changes mean that CASA will now be under significant pressure from the industry to:

1. Remove or increase the weight limit on LSA aircraft.
2. Allow aircraft with higher IAS, 4 seats and other features, like retractable gear.
3. Allow for other energy propulsion technologies.
4. Allow for the stall speed restrictions to be relaxed.

If (or when) implemented here, it will mean that LSA aircraft in VH registration (or RAAus) will have key limitations lifted. Watch this space, as the industry gets behind the changes - and pushes for these reforms.
